Power Cartridges

CARTRIDGE TECHNOLOGY

The Boulder Buster cartridges are the heart of the hydro-fracturing system.

The cartridges offer an effective way to safely break rocks and concrete in situations where conventional explosives are prohibited or operationally unacceptable. This innovative technology will solve the most troublesome rock breaking problems. The technology is based on the controlled use of propellant energy as the power source. Cartridges of propriety propellant are used to direct a pressure impulse into a drill hole filled with water. The pressure wave forces the water into existing micro-fractures in the rock structure forcing propagation of tensile fracturing within the rock structure.

The rapidly expanding gases of a Power Cartridge – once initiated – generates a rapid pressure impulse upon a column of water in a pre-drilled hole. This hydro-fracturing pressure impulse effect causes controlled tensile crack propagation in rock or other structural materials such as concrete.

Once the cartridge is placed into the drill-hole and the hole is filled with water the Magnum Busterâ„¢ is placed into the hole. The tool is held down with additional weight and covered with a flexible mat. A short lanyard is pulled to mechanically initiates an Initiation Cartridge in the breach of the tool.

It’s safe to use in close quarters since fly rock is controlled, noxious fumes are non-existent, and detonation effects and ground vibrations are not present. The technology enables simple breaking operations to be carried out without the hassles and restrictions placed on conventional explosive use – particularly in urban areas

About The Cartridges

There are three different primary Power Cartridges available. The one you choose will depend on the job at hand and the volume of rock to break. You can review the Boulder Buster Operation section for additional guidance.

General Power Cartridge Guidance:

The No 1 Initiation Cartridge is a small inexpensive cartridge placed in the tool breach and used to initiate the Power Cartridges within the drill hole.

The Power Weighted Cartridges can be matched to handle any variation of rock conditions that an operator might encounter. Select one to multiple cartridges that go into the water-filled hole as the above-described rock conditions dictate.

– No. 10 Power Cartridge
– No. 20 Power Cartridge
– No. 30 Power cartridge

– Breaking smaller material.
– Breaking medium to large material.
– Breaking massive material.

Cartridge Wings – Used to position the cartridges at an exact depth location within the drill hole. These wings are made to be field fit over the cartridge before inserting into the drill hole.
